Open Woods & Workshops is part of the Woodland Heritage Skills project and is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to conserve and promote sustainable productive woodland management skills in the UK.

The project strengthens the skills, networks, supply chains and processes required for a thriving UK wood culture, whilst raising awareness of the risks of losing these skills, and the benefits of upscaling them.

2026 Open Woods & Workshops Events

Fri 29th May 2026

Hulls Mill Farm, Halstead, Essex, CO9 2QT

Guided Woodland Walk

Few people get to see a working plantation woodland from the inside, the pruning decisions made decades ago, the thinning that shaped today's timber and the enterprises that make a woodland genuinely pay its way. This guided walk at Hulls Mill Farm offers exactly that.

Join us from 9:30am for a 10am start. Planted around 33 years ago, the woodland at Hulls Mill has been carefully managed to produce quality timber, and this 2-3 hour guided tour traces that journey from the ground up. You'll hear first-hand from Oliver Wright of J.S. Wright and Sons Ltd about growing willow specifically for cricket bats, a niche but fascinating corner of the UK timber trade, and the skilled process of transforming raw timber into a finished bat.

Along the way you'll also visit a micro charcoal production enterprise operating on site, see firewood processing and distribution in action and gain a real understanding of the long-term management planning that keeps a productive woodland thriving.

Whether you manage woodland yourself, work in the timber supply chain or simply want to understand what good stewardship looks like in practice, this is a rare opportunity to ask questions of people doing it well.

Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic, with seating available in the barns afterwards.

Thur 4th June 2026

Hosted at the Make Good Academy's training base within Morley College, you'll take a guided one-hour tour of the workshop facilities, watch live woodworking demonstrations and hear how the programme teaches practical furniture-making skills using responsibly sourced timber.

You'll also learn about the woodland to workshop to work pathway that connects sustainable forestry, craft training and real progression routes into employment, and what that means for the future of the trade.

This is a welcoming event for furniture makers, woodworkers, educators and anyone with a passion for craft who wants to see skills-based training in action.

Thur 4th June 2026

Aimed at interior designers, architects, specifiers and anyone with a professional interest in material-led design, you'll be welcomed into a working workshop to see timber in its raw and finished forms. You'll explore how different species behave and the role that texture, tone and honesty of materials plays in high-end interiors, with timber samples, half-finished pieces and current projects all on display.

There will be drinks and light snacks on arrival and plenty of time to explore the space at your own pace and chat informally with the Young & Norgate team.

Sat 6th June 2026

John Makepeace Furniture, Farrs, Beaminster, Dorset, DT8 3NB

Open Day - SOLD OUT

This is a rare invitation. John Makepeace, one of Britain's most respected furniture designers and makers, opens the doors of his home and studio at Farrs to share the art, science and evolving craft behind his work.

The visit begins at the seasoning shed, where a remarkable collection of English timbers tells its own story. Among them, oak planted at Longleat in 1740, harvested 240 years later in 1980, a living illustration of what good silviculture can achieve across generations. From there, guests are welcomed into the house for tea and refreshments before exploring the Makepeace furniture collection, including prototypes for commissions completed for private clients across the UK and around the world.

John will give a talk on designing and making furniture of uncompromising quality from Britain's native woods, and what it means to work at the highest end of the craft.

This special event runs from 3:30pm to 5:30pm

Collaborations in West Dorset: This event has been designed to complement two other Open Woods & Workshops events in West Dorset on the same day: the North Eggardon Farm Woodland Walk and a visit to the Architectural Association. Attend all three for a full day of inspiration and knowledge sharing. Please note that each event requires a separate booking

Sat 6th June 2026

Victor Crutchley, North Eggardon Farm, Dorset, DT6 3ST

Guided Woodland Walk

Earnscombe Wood is a woodland with a plan, and this guided walk is your chance to see what productive timber management looks like in practice.

Planted in 1990 under the Woodland Grant Scheme with oak, beech and walnut, and extended in 2006 with sweet chestnut, the woodland has been carefully high pruned over the years to develop a promising timber crop. In 2025 oak bark was peeled on site and some timber has already been milled, with further work underway as the woodland continues to take shape.

This is a working visit rather than a polished showcase, and all the better for it. You'll see a real woodland in active management and gain an honest understanding of the decisions, timescales and techniques involved in growing quality timber.

Collaborations in West Dorset: This event has been designed to complement two other Open Woods & Workshops events in West Dorset on the same day: a visit to John Makepeace Furniture in Beaminster and an event with the Architectural Association. Attend all three for a full day of inspiration and knowledge sharing. Please note that each event requires a separate booking.

Sat 6th June 2026

The Architectural Association, Hooke Park Hooke Park, Beaminster, Dorset, DT8 3PH

Hooke Park is unlike any other campus in the UK. As the woodland home of the Architectural Association's postgraduate Design and Make programme, it is a place where full-scale building experiments and hands-on architectural education happen in a living forest, and on 6 June you are invited to explore it.

From 10:00am to 3:30pm you'll have the chance to explore the campus buildings and woodland, learning about the Architectural Association's history and the ongoing teaching and research that makes Hooke Park such a distinctive place. It is a rare opportunity to see architecture and timber thinking at the experimental edge, where students and tutors are genuinely pushing the boundaries of what building with wood can look like.

Refreshments including cake and beverages will be on sale during the event.

Collaborations in West Dorset: This event has been designed to complement two other Open Woods & Workshops events in West Dorset on the same day: the North Eggardon Farm Woodland Walk and a visit to John Makepeace Furniture in Beaminster. Broomhill Wood packs a remarkable amount into 10 hectares. An RFS award-winning mixed woodland managed by the Wilkinson family, friends and neighbours under Continuous Cover Forestry principles, it is home to high forest stands, an orchard, a nuttery, a coppice understorey and a small but striking stand of Coast Redwood. In short, it is a woodland that rewards close attention.

You are welcome to visit either in the morning from 10:00am to 1:00pm or the afternoon from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. Guided tours with the owner run at 10:30am and 2:00pm and take in everything from silviculture and sawmilling to the rather more unpredictable challenge of squirrel management, giving you a genuine insight into what it takes to run a small but thriving and diverse woodland.

Whether you are a woodland owner, a forester or simply someone who wants to understand what excellent small-scale woodland management looks like in practice, this is a visit well worth making.

Sat 13th & Sun 14th June 2026

Angus Ross, Aberfeldy, Scotland, PH15 2AU

Guided Woodland Walk & Open Day

Angus Ross is throwing open both its historic workshop and its woodland for two days of discovery in the heart of Perthshire.

The open morning in the workshop runs from 9:30am to 12:30pm on both days and is a chance to step inside a working space that has been used continuously for woodwork since 1886. A small team of highly skilled craftsmen work here using a specialist combination of steam-bending and traditional cabinet making techniques to create exceptional curvaceous furniture for homes, gardens and public spaces. Visitors are welcome to look around and see work in progress at their own pace.

Both days also include a guided woodland walk through Old Castle Wood, a 50-acre mature mixed broadleaf woodland with a fascinating history. The oak trees here were previously coppiced for tannin during the 18th and 19th centuries, and it is from this very woodland that Angus Ross now sources oak for his furniture. After the walk, participants are invited back to the workshop to see how that raw material is transformed into finished pieces.

A wonderful opportunity for furniture makers, woodworkers and craft enthusiasts to trace the full journey from living woodland to finished furniture in one beautifully connected visit.

Glandy Cross Wood, Efailwen, Clynderwen, Wales, SA66 7JP

Guided Woodland Walk

Glandy Cross Wood is a commercial softwood plantation on the Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire border with an ambitious long-term vision - to transition from a predominantly even-aged single species woodland to a diverse, resilient and commercially productive multi-species irregular woodland. Guided Woodland Walk at Hazel Woodland Products, Rawhaw Wood, Kettering, NN14 1QZ

Guided Woodland Walk

Rawhaw Wood has a story stretching back centuries. A semi-natural ancient woodland, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and part of the historic Rockingham Forest in north Northamptonshire, it is also a living example of what dedicated long-term woodland restoration looks like in practice.

Over the last 30 years Hugh and Carolyn have been bringing this woodland back into management, reintroducing the coppice cycle to recreate a working hazel coppice. This guided walk, running from 10:30am to approximately 1:00pm, takes in the various stages of that cycle and the very different habitats each stage creates.

Along the way you'll hear about the strategies used to bring the woodland back into management, the building of dead hedges to protect against deer browsing, the management of standard trees including the large oaks and ash, and the deliberate choice to leave certain areas with little or no intervention. It is a nuanced and thoughtful approach to woodland management and one well worth understanding in depth.

Visitors are welcome to bring a packed lunch to enjoy on site after the walk.

A rewarding morning for woodland owners, conservationists, foresters and anyone with an interest in coppice management and ancient woodland restoration.

National Trust: Wallington National Trust Offices, Wallington, Northumberland, NE61 4EG

Guided Woodland Walk

Woodland creation at scale is one of the most important and complex challenges in land management today, and this guided walk at Wallington offers a rare opportunity to see two ambitious projects at very different stages of their journey.

Joining the National Trust countryside team and a woodland tenant from 10:00am to 1:00pm, the walk begins at Newbiggen Woodland, a remarkable 125-hectare site planted in 2024 that incorporates scrub, wet woodland, continuous cover forestry and wood pasture. From there the route follows the disused railway line to Elf Hills, the next planned woodland creation site, where the vision includes open walks and cycle trails, nature restoration and the linking of existing woodland pockets and veteran trees.

The circular route covers approximately four miles with some slopes and uneven ground, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

A fascinating and inspiring morning for woodland managers, foresters, conservationists and anyone with a keen interest in large-scale woodland creation and its role in the future of our landscapes.

Victor Crutchley, North Eggardon Farm, Dorset, DT6 3ST

Guided Woodland Walk & Open Day

Crutchley Farms offers a genuinely rare afternoon out, combining guided walks through three distinct woodlands with a fascinating range of workshop visits that show exactly what a productive farm woodland can achieve.

The walk begins near the sawmill, leading into Knowle Wood where you'll see semi-mature oak, ash, Lawson cypress and sycamore alongside twenty-year-old cherry, chestnut, larch, oak and red cedar that have been high pruned. From there the route takes in Belstone Copse, with its 60-year-old oak and ash, and Chaffins Copse, replanted with sweet chestnut and wild cherry 40 years ago at final spacing. Three very different woodlands, each telling its own story of management and time.

After the walks a short stroll up to North Eggardon Farm reveals what happens to the timber once it leaves the woodland. Workshop visits take in the solar kiln, timber stacks and processing area, joinery and yurt making workshop, a group holiday-let built using farm-grown timber and four small framed structures showcasing poplar, sweet chestnut, oak, leylandii, cedars and cypress. Tea and cake round off a thoroughly rewarding afternoon.

A brilliant visit for woodland owners, foresters, timber framers and anyone curious about the full journey from standing tree to finished structure.

Alder and South Sowdens Woods, East Sussex, TN31

Guided Woodland Walk

Spanning around 120 acres of semi-ancient woodland with plantations, Great Park, Alder and South Sowdens Woods is a site rich in both natural and human history. This afternoon visit from 2:00pm to 5:00pm is a chance to explore it in depth, with a guided walk starting at 2:00pm led by owner, Lisa Wood, who will talk through how the woodland is being actively managed and why.

The woods are managed with a strong emphasis on biodiversity, with work including the restarting of sweet chestnut coppicing, the felling of conifers and ongoing replanting. Lisa has also been recording birds, butterflies and other wildlife across the site over the past four years, building a compelling picture of how management decisions are affecting the woodland's ecology. The site is considered by Tilhill to have a particularly rich diversity of species.

The visit also includes a fascinating opportunity to speak with an archaeologist about the Roman bloomery on site, where iron ore was once smelted, adding a remarkable layer of history to the afternoon.

Management challenges including the eight-toothed spruce beetle, deer, squirrels and Asiatic hornet will also be discussed, making this a genuinely informative visit for anyone involved in woodland management.

A rewarding afternoon for woodland owners, conservationists, ecologists and anyone with a passion for the complex, layered story of ancient woodland in the UK.
