Woodland Heritage’s Annual
Field Day
Saturday 16 September 2023, at Cowdray Park, West Sussex
Woodland Heritage’s members and their guests are invited to enjoy its Annual Field Day which will take place at Cowdray Estate, near Midhurst in West Sussex, led by the head forester Nina Williams.
There have been many changes at Woodland Heritage this year, in light of which we are not able to create a full weekend. Our one day event will have a full itinerary, with talks, discussion and, as always, the chance to meet with other members. The staff and trustees look forward to welcoming you to this wonderful event.

Join us at Cowdray
The day will be hosted by Nina Williams, beginning in the beautiful historic walled garden. Nina has led the forestry team since January 2020 and has undertaken Woodland Heritage’s ‘Woodland to Workshop’ course.

Cowdray Estate extends to about 16,000 acres, of which 36% is woodland, three times the national average. Broadleaf high forest comprises 25% of this. You can read more at www.cowdray.co.uk/the-estate/woods/
We look forward to sharing the full itinerary with you, but you can look forward to:
A guided walk through the historic parkland and arboretum, taking a look at ancient oaks, and new resilience planting.
Time to admire a 1000-year-old oak tree, the largest sweet chestnut in England, along with a view over the Cowdray Estate.
A look at oak grown for timber – old stands and new planting.
Discussions around PAWS (Plantations on Ancient Woodland Sites) restoration and commercial conifer production.
A chance to see Ambersham Common and rare wooded heathland habitats – where management is very different, and we may have a chance to see some fantastic wildlife.
During the day, there will also be an update on Woodland Heritage's current projects and a chance to talk to the new Chief Executive, Trustees, and other staff members. The Annual General Meeting will be held during the course of the day.
